Network topology determines how devices are physically connected-and it directly impacts flexibility, reliability, and troubleshooting. Bus topology connects all devices along a shared backbone cable. It is flexible, easy to extend, and requires less wiring, making it popular in DALI and KNX installations. However, a break in the main bus can affect multiple devices.
Star topology connects each device directly to a central hub. This offers high reliability and simple fault diagnosis-if one cable fails, only that device goes offline. The downside is more cabling and higher installation cost.
Hybrid topology combines the best of both: a bus backbone connects floor-level or zone controllers, while star wiring connects individual fixtures and sensors to those controllers. This balances flexibility, reliability, and cost. In a commercial office building, for instance, each floor can use star wiring to a floor controller, and all floor controllers communicate over a bus backbone. The result is easier troubleshooting, simpler expansion, and robust performance. Ultimately, the right choice depends on project size, budget, reliability requirements, and future growth plans.
