Digital Addressable Lighting Interface – The Dedicated Lighting Standard for Fine‑Grained Control and Bidirectional Feedback

DALI is an international standard communication protocol developed specifically for digital lighting control, defined under IEC 62386. Unlike traditional analog controls, DALI employs a digital two-wire bus system that allows up to 64 individually addressable ballasts and control devices to communicate on a single control line. Each device can be assigned a unique address, enabling precise and flexible control-from individual dimming and group management to complex scene-setting and real-time status feedback.

One of DALI's most powerful features is its bidirectional communication capability. Devices can send status information back to the controller, enabling real-time monitoring, lamp failure detection, and energy consumption tracking. For example, in a modern open-plan office, DALI enables daylight harvesting-automatically adjusting artificial light levels based on available natural light-while occupancy sensors dim or switch off lights in unoccupied zones. The DALI-2 certification, introduced in 2014, further enhances interoperability between devices from different manufacturers. With a free topology (supporting both linear and star connections), a maximum cable length of 300 meters between devices, and no polarity sensitivity on the two-wire bus, DALI offers exceptional installation flexibility. Its primary drawback is higher system cost compared to analog alternatives, but for projects demanding fine-grained control and building management system integration, DALI remains the industry standard.
