PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) Dimming is a digital technique widely implemented in LED power supplies to control brightness. It rapidly switches the LED current on and off at a high frequency (typically >2kHz to avoid visible flicker), while keeping the peak current constant at the LED's rated value. Brightness is adjusted by varying the duty cycle - the percentage of time the current is "on" within each cycle. For example, a 50% duty cycle delivers half the average power, resulting in approximately 50% brightness.

This method offers several key advantages: excellent color stability (no chromatic shift because LEDs always operate at full current or off), high precision and linearity, wide dimming range (often 0.1%–100%), and consistent efficiency across levels. It prevents color temperature changes common in analog current-reduction methods and maintains optimal LED performance characteristics like efficacy and forward voltage.

PWM dimming is commonly integrated directly into the driver or controlled via an external PWM signal from microcontrollers, sensors, or dimmers. It is ideal for applications requiring precise control, such as stage lighting, architectural accents, color-mixing RGB systems, automotive lighting, and displays where flicker-free operation and color fidelity are critical.

Potential drawbacks include possible electromagnetic interference (EMI) from fast switching edges, potential audible noise in some designs, and performance degradation over long cable runs due to inductance/capacitance. High-quality drivers mitigate these with proper filtering and frequencies above 2–4kHz.

Overall, PWM provides professional-grade, flicker-free dimming with superior color consistency compared to analog methods, making it a preferred choice in modern, high-performance LED systems.
