LonWorks is a control networking platform developed by Echelon Corporation and standardized as EIA/ANSI 709.1. Unlike many protocols that operate at the application layer only, LonWorks integrates all seven layers of the OSI model, providing a complete communication and control solution. The protocol supports multiple physical media-including twisted pair, power line carrier, optical fiber, radio frequency, and coaxial cable-offering exceptional deployment flexibility. Each LonWorks device contains a Neuron Chip that handles both communication and application processing, enabling truly distributed intelligence where devices can communicate peer-to-peer without relying on a central controller.

In lighting applications, LonWorks enables decentralized control strategies where individual luminaires, sensors, and switches can be "bound" together through logical connections defined in software. For example, a daylight sensor can be directly bound to a group of dimmable ballasts, allowing autonomous light level adjustments without involving a central processor. This distributed architecture provides inherent reliability-if one device fails, the rest of the system continues to operate normally. LonWorks also supports advanced features such as lamp failure detection, power regulation against line voltage variations, and high-frequency dimming. While the protocol's market share has declined in recent years due to the rise of KNX and BACnet, LonWorks remains a robust solution for industrial lighting control and retrofit applications where media flexibility is critical.
