Typically, 0V corresponds to minimum brightness (off or 1%), and 10V corresponds to maximum brightness (100%). This is achieved through a separate pair of control wires, making it a simple, cost‑effective solution that has been used for decades in commercial and industrial lighting. Its linear control characteristic means that a 5V signal produces approximately 50% brightness, which makes it intuitive and easy to configure with standard analog dimmers or building automation systems.
The primary advantage of 0‑10V dimming is its simplicity and wide compatibility with existing control systems. Many legacy dimming panels and occupancy sensors support this protocol, making it a popular choice for retrofits. For instance, a warehouse operator upgrading to LED high‑bay fixtures can often reuse their existing 0‑10V control wiring, significantly reducing installation costs and downtime. However, this approach requires dedicated low‑voltage cabling, which adds material and labor expenses in new builds compared to wireless solutions. Additionally, because it is a unidirectional analog signal, the controller receives no feedback about the actual fixture status – a dimmed light that fails to respond cannot be detected remotely. Despite these limitations, 0‑10V dimming remains a reliable and straightforward option for basic dimming needs, especially in large open spaces like factories, parking garages, and supermarkets.
