The European Union recently released the new horticultural lighting energy efficiency regulation, EU 2023/2026. This standard is the first dedicated energy efficiency specification for plant growth lamps since the 2019/2020 General Lighting Ecodesign Regulation.
1. Minimum quantum efficiency (μmol/J): All LED grow lamps sold in the EU must achieve a photosynthetically active photon efficiency of at least 2.2 μmol/J, gradually increasing to 2.5 μmol/J from 2026.
2. Intelligent control and spectrum adjustment: Mid-range and high-end devices must automatically adjust the spectrum and light intensity to optimize illumination according to the plant's growth stage.
3. Product energy efficiency labeling: Lamp packaging or instructions must include an energy efficiency label that complies with the classification standards, similar to the A-G grading system, with A representing the highest efficiency, to facilitate user identification and comparison.
4. A phase-out mechanism: Products with efficiencies below Class C (e.g., below 2.2 μmol/J) will be banned from sale starting in 2028. The regulation will be fully implemented after a one-year market grace period.
The new standard marks a new milestone in Europe's horticultural lighting energy efficiency management, guiding the industry towards higher technological levels and sustainable development.
