0-10V dimming is the oldest and most widely deployed analog control method in the lighting industry. It uses a dedicated pair of low-voltage wires to carry a DC voltage signal between 0 and 10 volts, where 10V commands full output and 0V (or typically 1V) commands minimum brightness. The control signal is analog, meaning all fixtures connected to the same 0-10V line respond simultaneously to the same dimming command. Because the vast majority of LED drivers on the market support 0-10V dimming, it remains a cost-effective and straightforward solution.

The primary advantage of 0-10V dimming is its simplicity and low cost-no addressing, no complex configuration, and minimal hardware requirements. This makes it ideal for industrial lighting, warehouses, parking garages, and other applications where uniform dimming across large areas is sufficient. For instance, a factory upgrading to LED high-bay fixtures can often reuse existing 0-10V control wiring, significantly reducing installation costs and downtime. However, the protocol has significant limitations: it provides no individual fixture addressing, no status feedback, and no fault reporting. If a lamp fails, the control system has no way of knowing which one. Additionally, because it is an analog signal, 0-10V is susceptible to voltage drop over long cable runs and electromagnetic interference. For projects with 100 or fewer fixtures where simple group dimming is adequate, 0-10V remains a pragmatic choice. But for larger installations requiring maintenance visibility and granular control, digital protocols like DALI are strongly recommended.
